Royal Visit to Fairlie Gardener's Exhibit
their garden that one day they would be showing a replica of their garden
and demonstrating their composting processes to royalty.
Well, that's what happened over the weekend of 29th-31st May
at the Gardening Scotland 2009 Show at Ingliston.
The Organic Growers exhibit was visited by H.R.H Princess
Anne who spent some time with
Ron Gilchrist learning about hot-box composting,
wormeries and the techniques of waste recycling
and building gardens on brown-field sites.
The exhibit included three raised-beds filled with vegetables
grown in Fairlie, working hot-box composting boxes and and two wormeries.
The writhing collection of worms was a great hit with
most of the children but some of their mothers
were not so sure....
There was a steady stream of visitors over the three days of the
show interested in the processes used and finding out how they could replicate
them and the Fairlie garden.
The exhibit was also visited by the Scottish Minister
of the Environment Roseanna Cunningham and
Beechgrove Garden hosts Jim McColl and Carol Baxter.
The team from Fairlie did a lot of talking and came back with
good tans due to the wonderful weather over the three days.
The number of beds in the garden itself has recently doubled
and all have been allocated and dug over within hours of becoming
available. The garden is flourishing as well as the villagers who
are getting lots of fresh air, exercise and wonderful vegetables.
