Fairlie’s much-loved road sweeper Ian Hamilton dies
Ian Hamilton, the well-known and much-loved road sweeper of Fairlie, has died.
The Largs and Millport Weekly News announced the sad news on their facebook page in the early hours of Saturday morning (November, 26).
The paper described the local man as: “a true village great and a man who cleared the streets all year and left it spic and span” and who “took real pride and perfection in his job.”
The Weekly News added: “After retiring, Ian could still be seen sweeping up.
“He liked nothing more than a sup of a pint of Guinness at the Mudhook, and latterly, Ye Old Anchor Inn, where he would sit in the corner.
“His favourite line was 'Are ye behaving yersel'?’”
Lots of locals took to facebook to offer their condolences and voice their sadness at Ian’s death.
Many reminisced about this pillar of the community who seemed to have touched a lot of peoples’ lives in Fairlie.
John Cowpe commented: “Legend, will always be a memory of life growing up in Fairlie”; whilst Mick Donnelly said: “Small guy - giant of a man.”
Margaret Hood posted: “Rip Ian.
"You will be missed by the whole of Fairlie and the streets won’t be the same without you. So sad xxx”
