Do we have a problem with dangerous dogs?

A swan had to be put down after being savaged by a dog on the seafront.

The male swan had to be put to sleep at the RSPB sanctuary at Lochwinnoch after the attack.

The Largs & Millport Weekly News reports that the swan was defending its mate and cygnet from the dog.

The dog has been reported to have been a Staffordshire bull terrier or possibly a Pitbull, although that's unlikely since Pitbulls are an American cross-breed and are controlled by law in the UK.

The attack follows an incident on Largs promenade when a Jack Russell was attacked and a 19-year-old local reported to the fiscal.

Isolated incidents, or is there a growing problem with dangerous dogs? Local dog-owners must be particularly aware if there is a problem. Have your say here on s1 Fairlie.

Dana Kucinski says

Oh this is absolutely awful! We shouldn't be asking is there a rise in dangerous dogs but rather is there a rise in dangerous humans? Dangerous humans in the context that they are not responsible. All dogs after all have the nature of a wild animal but it is how they are properly taken care of and trained by their owners. Trained to be a balanced dog. It really does annoy me when such incidents like this happen - dogs as a whole are being prosecuted by the ignorance of poor dog owners. I have a wildlife foudation and this truly upsets me that someone allowed this to happen.

Beata Kucinski-Thomson says

I don't think there is a growing problem with dangerous dogs, I however believe that there is a growing problem with unresponsible people. Unfortunately there seems to be a growth in the number of people obtaining dogs that are often labelled as dangerous, such as staffordshire bull terries. Although it is wrong to stereotype, there seems to be certain kind of people who buys these dogs for status reasons or for fighting. They don't have the interest of the dog in mind and these dogs can consequently develop various behavioural problems, whether it be aggression through insecurity or nervousness.  Nevertheless, there are a number of staffordshire bull terries about that are well looked after, well behaved and generally very friendly. I think it is extrememly wrong to label certain breed of dogs as dangerous, rather I think that there should be more legislation protecting these dogs from getting in to the wrong hands.
