Challenge to Hunterston coal-fired plant defeated in court

A legal challenge against plans for a new £3bn coal-fired power station near Fairlie at Hunterston has been turned down by the courts.

Environmental groups had launched the challenge against plans for the new coal-fired power station .

The challenge was led by Marco McGinty from Saltcoats, who mounted a legal challenge with the help of RSPB, WWF and Friends of the Earth.

A judicial review challenged a decision by the Scottish government to include the planned facility at Hunterston in the National Planning Framework, which meant campaigners could not challenge the need for the plant - only matters such as the site and design.

However, judges ruled that a consultation process undertaken by the developer, Ayrshire Coal, had been sufficient.

The proposals by Ayrshire Power, which is owned by Peel Energy Ltd, are for a site between the existing Clydeport coal handling facility at the Hunterston Terminal and the Hunterston B nuclear power plant.

So much for Alex Salmond and his green credentials I knew it was to good to last. Give time time and we will see the real Alex Salmond In the pockets of the multi nationals.

I think this is an infringement of Human Rights.  What about our right to breathe clean air?  Could this matter be taken to the European Courts?

I deeply regret that most of the comments which I would make about this project would be censored.

However I trust and hope that the following are reasonable and within the bounds of possibility and responsibility.

The North Ayrshire coast already has a suffiency of visual disasters.  The coal port is not attractive and is a visual intrusion into the visual amenity of the area.  Hunterston B is possibly necessary as a means of power but cannot be seen as attractive.  Hunterston A is a visual obscenity and should have been clad in a visually reponsible material.

The current proposal for a coal fired disaster are unreasonable and totally against the hopeful infrastructure of this area.

From Millport it will be a very large blot on the tourist landscape.

The transport infrastructure on the mainland surrounding it is incapable of coping with the vast amount of road traffic which will have to happen - either by employees (I have absolutely nothing against people gaining employment) or by the vastly increased amount of commercial traffic.

On the environmental issue.  Is it really necessary to heighten the chimney with the attendant visual impact or is this only to carry the noxious fumes a wee bit higher into the atmosphere so that someone else will have to suffer them?

Take it away and leave us alone - we have a very nearly attractive place to live and work in and we would like that to continue.
