Fairlie Parish Church 175th Anniversary Celebrations

Fairlie Parish Church 175
1834-2009

The anniversary takes place in 2009 and commemorates the founding of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Fairlie when parish status was granted from being a "Chapel of Ease" of St Columba's Parish Church, Largs. The church has evolved to being the twin Parishes of St Paul and St Margaret to the present day of Fairlie Parish Church. Fairlie Parish Church used to be called St Paul's, while St Margaret's, next to the Village Hall, has been converted into a house during recent years.

The Parish anniversary will be celebrated between January-April 2009 when there will be events for all ages culminating in a visit on 26 April from the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The organising committee under the chairmanship of the Minister James Whyte is Judith Cunningham, Anne Ellor, Nancy Forsyth, Linda Beveridge, Alastair Beveridge and Andrew Davie.

All are invited to the celebrations. It would also be good to welcome "old" Fairlie Folk during this time:

  • Those who have grown up in the Village and now live elsewhere.
  • Those who were baptised in the Church in years past.
  • Those who were married in the Church.
Please invite your friends and families to return and celebrate with us! Everyone is invited.

Here are some dates for your Diary:

Jan 11th - 175 Family Praise Service 10.30am in the Church. This service will mark the beginning of our celebration.

Feb 6th - Ceilidh in the Church. All ages. Tickets from Alastair Beveridge or Andrew Davie.

Feb/Mar - Time Line Display in the church. Co-ordinated by Linda Beveridge

Apr 26th - Celebration of Communion. Conducted by the Right Rev David Lunan, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Thereafter an informal reception so that the Moderator may meet the people of Fairlie.

Souvenirs of our 175 celebration will soon be on sale from Anne Ellor and Judith Cunningham.

Lesley Bond says

My name is Lesley Bond nee Currie. I was babtised in the church and married in the church on 9th November 1968. I now live in Torquay. When I was a child me and my sisters always went to Sunday School and we looked forward to the Sunday School trips. We would board a Clyde Coast bus and were given a paper bag which contained our packed lunch. We usually went to the Blair Estate but this particular year we were going to Milport, however the weather was so bad we ended up in Largs. I hope your Anniversary celebrations are successful!
